Name of Assignment: Promoting KCS Running Sports (Junior Project)
Subject: Junior Seminar Facilitator/Teacher: Cassie Kepler |
|
Project Description |
First progress presentation
|
The first semester of junior seminar is dedicated to our junior projects. We had to come up with a rigorous research-based project that impacts our community.
Ms. Cassie is my cross country coach, so she suggested that I become the cross country team manager as a part of my project. I promoted our cross country team and I made an attendance form and workout/race log to track our teams progress in running and overall team engagement.

Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This project addresses civil literacy and engagement skills because my project directly impacts my community. I worked with my fellow team members and with my coaches throughout this project.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of the attendance form and the workout/race log that I created using google sheets. It proved to be really useful as we tracked our progress. The sheet will also be helpful to me as I create the final product of my project, which is an infographic explaining the outcome of my project.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved my civil literacy and engagement skills by interacting with my community in a way that would make a positive impact. I had to work directly with others in order to make my project a reality.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
I am having the most difficulty with tracking the impact of my project. Everyone trained differently over the summer, and this could also have an impact on their performance (whether they used the workout sheets or not). Other variables can also affect performance such as sickness and injury. I have to come up with a way to take all of these variables into account before I can make any conclusions about my data.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
I think that I could improve this project by starting it earlier (possibly during the summer). This way, I might be able to account for the impact of summer training on the athletes. I think that I could have also encouraged athletes to use the workout sheets, instead of just making it available and asking them if they used it in the end.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This project relates the brainstorming projects that we did earlier in junior seminar. It also relates to the junior project reflections we did at an exhibition last year.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I think that I can apply what I learned about research and variables to future courses. I am considering doing a research project for my senior project and internship. Reflecting on my experimental design from this project will hopefully help me create a more controlled research project for my senior year.
