Project Description
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I think this project addresses financial, economic and business literacy skills. We demonstrated our entreprenurial skills by creating our own projects to address a community issue. Budgeting is an important part of managing finances, and we practiced using spreadsheets to organize our expenses through this project.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I enjoy using Google Sheets and I am proud of the way the cells were programmed to automatically calculate my total expenses simply by modifying the prices and number of items. I plan to use Google Sheets for future projects.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved on my financial, economic, and business literacy skills in this project by organizing my expenses. I would not have thought of creating a budget sheet for my project because a lot of the expenses seemed trivial. However, in total, everything that I listed added up to about $40 for 3 weeks. While this is not a huge amount of money, it is not trivial either, especially if I plan to use my own money to purchase all of the items.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
I had to throughly consider all of the items that I would need for my senior project. This included stationary, papers for flyers, and snacks for members. I had trouble calculating the quantity of each item because I did not know how long my program would last. Now I realize that I will be hosting the program year-long, and I will have to adjust my budget accordingly.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
I think that I could improve this work by having a better overall plan for my senior project. I was not sure how long to host SAT prep sessions throughout the year, but now I realize there are quite a few students that want to join for the entire year. This affects my budget.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I have used Google Sheets in the past for my junior project (keeping workout and race data for the cross country team). I was able to use what I learned from using Google Sheets to create my budget sheet. We practiced creating monthly budgets in junior seminar last year as well. It was on paper, but the concept was similar.
How can you apply this to future learning?
When I am in charge of my own finances, I will need to be able to set a budget. I can use Google Sheets or another software to do this for convenience. Budgeting is a skill that I can use for my whole life.
